LICENSURE

Types of License

 

Practitioner License
This teacher license, valid for three years, is issued to applicants who hold a bachelor’s degree, are enrolled in or have completed a preparation program approved by the State Board of Education, and have verified content knowledge. The Practitioner License may be renewed once. This teacher license may be advanced to the Professional License if educators meet the following criteria: Three years of experience, AND the recommendation of the Director of Schools -OR- documentation of 30 Professional Development Points (PDPs).

 

Professional License – This license is valid for six years. In order to renew the Professional License, educators must earn 60 Professional Development Points (PDPs). In order to renew the Professional Occupational License, educators must also submit proof of current industry certification, where required by teacher endorsement areas.

 

Practitioner Occupational Education License – This license may be issued to individuals who have met requirements pursuant to State Board of Education policy, had content verification provided by the Tennessee Department of Education, Career and Technical Division and holds the required current/valid industry certification prior to entering Tennessee public schools. The license is only valid for three years of teaching in a Tennessee public or state accredited private school.

 

JROTC License – This is a five-year license issued to active or retired military personnel who seek to serve as junior reserve officers’ training corps (JROTC) teachers. The JROTC License is issued based upon a certification of preparation by the branch of the military approving the teacher placement.  The JROTC License does not entitle an individual to teach courses other than those designated as part of the JROTC program.  No other endorsement can be added to the JROTC teaching license.  The JROTC teacher license is renewable.

 

Instructional Leadership License – Aspiring (ILL-A) – The ILL-A is an administrator license, valid for five years, that is issued to applicants who hold a bachelor’s degree and are enrolled in an instructional leadership preparation program approved by the State Board of Education. The ILL-A may not be renewed.

 

Instructional Leadership License – Beginning (ILL-B) – The ILL-B is an administrator license, valid for five years, that is issued to applicants who hold a bachelor’s degree, have completed an instructional leadership preparation program approved by the State Board of Education, and have submitted passing scores on the required content assessment. The ILL-B may be renewed.

 

School Services Personnel License – This license is required for school guidance counselors, school psychologists, speech language pathologists, and school social workers.  This practitioner license may be advanced to the Professional License if educators meet the following criteria: Three years of experience, AND the recommendation of the Director of Schools -OR- documentation of 30 Professional Development Points (PDPs).  Then, in order to renew the professional license, these school service personnel employees must earn 60 Professional Development Points (PDPs).
