Looking to the Future
It is no secret that this school year has been one of struggles for so many of us. Not only have we had to juggle our personal responsibilities, but we have had to face, adapt, and conquer many professional challenges.
Teachers across the state have had to embrace a new evaluation system that many didn’t completely understand, that all of the “rules” had not been created for, and seemed too big of a mountain to conquer. But, from the many teachers that I have had conversations with, we have climbed that mountain. We have proven that we can stand in the face of adversity, conquer our fears, still love our students, and teach with as much commitment as ever before.
However, I challenge you not to allow yourselves to be complacent. We must continue to contact legislatures, the state school board members, the Governor, and others as we fight for our profession. Don’t send one letter or email when you are mad and then “rest on your laurels.” Set reminders in your calendar to email legislatures monthly. Sometimes it may seem like you are saying the same ol’ thing – but as my mama always said, “The squeaky wheel gets the grease!”
As we move into the next fiscal year of your local association, we are hoping to have an ever growing presence in both the schools and the community. We cannot accomplish this with YOU! We have plans to increase Our local scholarship offerings, participate in local events (Relay for Life), and other community related activities. I want to challenge you to look for ways to get involved in your local organization. Push yourself beyond your school walls!
