Quality Counts
Tennessee's teachers work hard every day to give our students a world-class education. Keeping quality teachers in our classrooms is the key to creating successful schools and outstanding student achievement.
The most effective teachers produce student achievement at a significantly higher rate than less effective educators. Ensuring we have quality teachers in Tennessee schools must be a top priority.
To attract and keep quality teachers in Tennessee, we must offer higher salaries and better benefits.
- To attract and keep excellent teachers, Tennessee must raise the state salary funding level to at least 90 percent of the national average teaching salary.
- Teaching is a mentally and physically demanding occupation. To ensure quality teachers in every classroom, Tennessee must pay 80 percent of educators' health insurance premiums.
- If we want good teachers to stay, we have to raise the retirement benefit from 48 percent to 60 percent of an educator's salary.
It takes all of us working together to achieve these goals.
