How can parents help improve a child's work at school? Try out these suggestions:
- Visit school and meet your child’s teacher. You are welcome. When parents and teachers stay in touch and support each other, children learn and grow.
- Ask your child, "What happened in school today?" If your child says “nothing,” don’t give up. Ask more questions. Ask about the day's activities.
- Learn school regulations and practices so that you will know what your child needs to do. When you have questions or concerns, discuss them first with the teacher. Talk to the principal if you still feel uncertain.
- Make sure your child is at school unless he or she is sick. When your child is absent, that day's activities are lost.
- Watch TV together and discuss what you watch. Watch high quality programs. But don't be afraid to turn the TV off for reading, for family activities, and for meal time. The time you share with your child is much more important that mindless channel surfing.
- Any time your child talks about "hating" something at school, find out why. Enlist the teacher’s help in changing those negative feelings.
