Course Description:

Administrative leadership is essential for any school initiative to be developed, implemented and sustained. School-wide positive behavior support (SWPBS) is an integrated systems approach. It is an entire paradigm shift in the traditional ways in which school discipline is addressed—moving from reaction to teaching and prevention. During this forum, participants learn from presenters and administrators who are currently using the SWPBS system.
SWPBS is a national trend of schools, districts and states that are building capacity to create sustainable systems change to decrease problem behavior and improve social and academic competence for all students. Four critical elements of SWPBS include:
- Valued outcomes of academic achievement and social competence for all students
- Data collection strategies to support decision-making
- Evidence-based prevention, intervention and reaction strategies and
- Efficient integrated systems and procedures with empirically valid practices
Three tiers of prevention and intervention in the SWPBS model include:
Tier 1
Primary preventions which address the majority of students’ needs.
Tier 2
Secondary interventions to address the needs of students considered at risk of failure, and |
Tier 3
Tertiary preventions to address the needs of those students for whom primary and secondary preventions were insufficient to meet their academic and social needs.
