Public Chapters No. 376 and 369 were signed into law on June 7, 2007. The laws amend existing Tennessee law related to: the Basic Education Program (BEP) that allocates state money to school districts; differentiated pay; the evaluation of teachers; the rights and responsibilities of principals; a director of schools’ power to contract with principals; school improvement plans; and teacher training programs.
Click here for a Q & A that looks at the laws, possible outcomes and hints of questions that remain unanswered. Please be aware that the legislation contains not only ambiguities in language that will have to be more fully interpreted, but also requires rules and procedures still be developed by the State Board of Education, the Department of Education and the Commissioner of Education.
